As a child, I remember many ambling family drives down the south coast of Natal on a lazy Sunday, stopping off on the roadside for a picnic at one of the many little tables and benches provided. It was considered a treat, and quite the ‘in’ thing to do. At regular intervals along the old main road, these tables and areas around them were always kept pristine. Finding an unoccupied one could be quite a challenge on a Sunday afternoon, often making you drive quite a bit further than anticipated.
Recently on a drive down south, hubby mentioned the tables, so we started looking out for them, but only managed to find one unkempt one on the road between Durban and Scottburgh. The sign we saw was on the opposite side of the road, pointing in the opposite direction.
